Comics & Community Energy

In May 2025, we hosted two comics co-creation workshops at City St George’s, University of London and Hulme Garden Centre in Manchester. Funded by a BA/Leverhulme Small Grant, the events had four aims:

  • to begin documenting the shared stories and lived experiences of community energy practioners;

  • to share practitioner knowledge and experience between existing projects, from volunteers through to policy makers;

  • to identify obstacles to establishing, running, and expanding community energy projects, and to reflect on challenges;

  • and to produce an accessible series of comics for those interested in learning more about community energy and starting their own projects.

Both workshops were co-hosted by myself and Kremena Dimitrova, with vital help from Reed Puc (City) and Alison Browne (Manchester). Below is a gallery of both workshops and a selection of comics made by participants. Kremena and I will be developing excerpts and collages of these images to generate a longer co-created graphic narrative in the coming months.
